Activity Tools
As you share the Digital Activities with your students, you can use these tools.
Wiley Blevins Teaching Phonics includes the following digital activities. See the descriptions of each on the pages that follow.
- Spin the Wheel
- Concentration
- Sort It
- Word Ladder
- Tap It
- Checkers
- Build Words
- Blend Words
- Spell Words
- Interactive Story
Spin the Wheel
- To play, have students take turns spinning wheels on the screen.
- Players click on each of the spinners and then read aloud the letters or word parts where the spinners stop.
- Once a spinner is spun, students can spin it again to change the letter or word part.
Use the scoreboard to turn this into a game! Divide the class into two teams. Have players take turns spinning the spinners and reading the words. Give a point each time a player spins a real word and reads it correctly.
Concentration
- To play, divide the class into two teams.
- Players from each team take turns clicking on any two cards to reveal the content underneath.
- The activity will ask the players if they made a match.
- If the content matches, the player selects yes, and the activity moves the cards to the team’s box.
- If not, the player selects no, and the cards turn back over.
- Play continues until all of the cards have been matched.
Sort It
- Tell students that they are going to sort items into columns.
- Invite students to take turns sorting each item into the appropriate column.
- Use the scoreboard to turn this into a game! Divide the class into two teams. Give a point to the team each time they sort an item correctly on the first try.
- Challenge students by using the timer! Set the timer and challenge students to sort all the items before the timer runs out.
Word Ladder
- Tell students that they will be completing a word ladder.
- Have students take turns filling in the missing word by changing one letter at a time to get from the bottom rung to the top rung.
- After students complete the word ladder, an image will be revealed.
Tap It
- Tell students that they are going to tap the correct answer as quickly as they can.
- Have students take turns tapping the correct answer.
Challenge students by using the timer! Time each player during his or her turn. Whoever has the fastest time wins.
Checkers
- To play, divide the class into two teams, red and yellow.
- The game is played just like checkers, except players perform a task on each space they land on (for example, reading the word on the space). If a player cannot complete the task, he or she returns to the original space. Review the following rules for playing checkers:
- Players from each team take turns dragging a checker one square forward diagonally on each turn.
- A player from one team can capture a checker of the other team by jumping over it. The jumped checker then moves to the jumper's side of the game board.
- Players must jump other checkers when they can. A player can jump more than one checker at a time, as long as he or she is moving forward.
- When a player successfully moves a checker to the far side of the game board, the player can then move the checker backwards.
- The first team to remove all of the other team’s checkers from the board by jumping them wins the game.
Build Words
- Tell students that they will build words using spelling patterns.
- Have students take turns filling in the blanks to make words using each spelling pattern.
- After all the words have been built, a picture will be revealed.
Blend Words
- Choose a word to blend from the list at the top of the screen.
- Swipe your finger across the word or click the Auto Highlight button on the bottom left to highlight the word as you read it aloud.
- Continue to choose words to blend, and have students take turns blending the words.
Spell Words
- Have students say the picture name.
- Ask students to take turns typing the spelling for each sound in a separate box.
Interactive Story
- Read the story and questions aloud with students.
- Have students take turns putting a circle or square around the target words.
