Literacy Pro includes the Scholastic Reading Measure (SRM), an adaptive reading assessment that provides valid and reliable Lexile measures. The SRM matches students to books while informally monitoring student progress. Teachers assign the SRM to students and then, after students complete the assessment, their Lexile measures are automatically recorded.
As students explore books, they’ll see a target icon on books that are within their independent reading range—although students are always free to read any book based on their interests and grade levels.
Students are taken through directions that explain the following:
- For each question, students will read a short passage and select the best word to complete a sentence.
- Students have three “skips” to spend on questions they cannot answer.
- Students then complete one practice question.
Student Task: For each question, students read a short passage and select the best word to complete a sentence.
Adaptivity: The SRM is adaptive, so the difficulty of questions changes according to each student’s performance. If students answer a question correctly, they will then proceed to a more difficult question. If students answer the question incorrectly, they will go to an easier question.
Number of Questions: All students will answer 32 questions, plus one practice question, for a total of 33 questions. Each question that is skipped will be replaced by another question.
Assessment Time: Typically, the SRM takes about 40–50 minutes on average, but the time varies by student.
Log Out Any Time: Students can log out of the SRM at any time. Their work will be saved, and they can resume where they left off. Students log out by selecting their name at the upper right of the screen, and then selecting Sign out.
Completion: When students finish the SRM, their Lexile measure will appear on their screens. Lexile measures will automatically be recorded for teachers and administrators in the reports section of Literacy Pro.
